The Deep South trip, 2009 – Day 0

July 17th, 2009 by Alex

This trip started out as a last minute thing – both my girlfriend, Marina, and I have little to do next week, so we figured why not take a week away. The quickly became a road trip and that quickly morphed into the South – Georgia, to see the guidestones, to be specific, but then only because it allowed me to go via Deal’s Gap.

But the weird thing is, the more planning I’m doing, the more I realized I’ve not planned. What’s the old saying? Fail to plan, plan to fail? I’m not that bad. While I leave tomorrow, I am packed already and I’ve already chosen and printed out routes and Marina has already booked us the majority of the hotels we need. The biggest problem we’ve had to far is that she inadvertently booked the first night in Williamsburg, VA not Wiliamsburg, PA. A single letter for sure, but some 500km apart. That’s all fixed up now, especially as there seems to be little in Williamsburg, PA.

So, given that we are as ready as can be, we will leave toronto tomorrow with a weeks clothing and entertainment (I can’t live without my notebook and iPod) crammed into two panniers, a tank bag and an Ogio backpack and head south. We’ll pass through Buffalo before heading south on the 219 and into Altoona, PA where we’ll stay for the night.

And from there, we’ll be heading on the I-95 and US220, then US219 to hit Charleston, WV for the night.

Once I can get Google Maps working reliably, I’ll post links to the routes.

So, if you see a couple of lost-looking people on an overloaded white Triumph Tiger 1050 over the next few days, give us a wave. Better yet, lead us to the nearest coffee shop. We might need it.

When you’re in GA, you’d be doing yourself a great disservice if you fail to ride GA-60 or GA-180. If you’re taking US129 down from Deal’s Gap into GA, you’ll go right across GA-180. Take that West to GA-60, and ride that too. That entire area is absolutely phenomenal.

Great tip and I know you mentioned it before, but I can’t seem to see it on the map – am headed to the NE corner of Georgia. Do you have a map that shows it and maybe makes me hit Elbert County, GA? Is it the road past Pinnacle Mountain? I think it is.
