I Just Crashed My Triumph Tiger 1200

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The craziest thing just happened. I had a crash. I was just boasting the other day to Marina that I'd not had a street crash in years. And today the statistic changed. Well CrashLight worked perfectly and I was not meant to be testing.

I was parked in the street. I set off from the office. I was riding what couldn't have been more than half a block reaching 30 kilometers/hour when it seemed as if the steering locked on my Triumph Tiger 1200. It simply locked to the right and I went down sliding about 50 meters. As you can see, the crash bar did its job. My KLIM jacket looks ok. My Arai didn't touch the ground. It's the strangest thing. I'm completely at a loss.

I have to say I'm more upset than hurt but the shoulder does sting and there will be bruising. My jacket has a hole in it and I have no bike. Now I'm waiting for the tow truck.

Examining the road, there's no gravel, no oil, nothing. How the hell did I go down?

You can see my slide by the white lines

Update: Once the CAA guy arrived, who I should say was excellent, he pointed out this mystery crack in the steering column.

Getting the Tiger on the tuck was an ordeal; the front wheel does not straighten

Luckily, I only had a bit of road rash. Wear your gear people! #atgat

This is the road rash I got with the slightest crash, not bad, but I need Kevlar

I am glad you are OK and it didn't happen at higher speeds

@champers - How long have you been sitting on that line? I wouldn't say I've triumphed but let's just say I am _explore_ing my options

@alex: So you've triumphed?

I would suggest that each time you unlock your steering, that you turn it slowly lock to lock before riding off, just to make sure the lock pin fully retracted. Several other Triumphs have had recalls four mismanufactured ABS modules. Maybe you are next?

Finally made it to the dealers the other day. The good news is the bike is as good as new. The steering is freed up with no damage and the bracket is back in place. There's a little minor cosmetic wear (mainly the engine guards which did their job).

the downside is that there is no identifiable cause at this time, though an ABS malfunction is possible. It's being escalated with Triumph as we speak

got a chance to look at a buddys Tiger 1050 up close. lock pin malfunction could cause problems, but the external lock pin would be easy to inspect. @barneymap @alex

@barneymap @alex I may be wrong?!? I don't know for sure but the best Google picture I could get shows the tiger with an old school external steering lock. This changes things as to the cause question

@Barneymap @Alex I believe the Sprint RS had an external steering lock, and the Tiger has an internal lock. not the same...... Someone correct me if I am wrong.

@UncleMac -I should point out that is partly me trying to figure out what to do about it.

It's also sadly pretty much the standard timeframe in Canada.

@alex, you still don't have your bike? That's awful service... 😞

Time for an update - Triumph are still saying there's nothing wrong but they also can't diagnose more until they fix the bracket (as they can't ride it in a straight line until they do) so I've given them the go-ahead to do that.

Here's hoping they can get that done today so I can get on with the horribly expensive process of fixing the road rash on the bike this weekend

@Barneymap - Good to know. I'm going to pass that along to my mechanic and contacts at Triumph.

This is a known problem on the sprint RS. Maybe other triumphs too i guess

Just catching up with this now...glad you're OK...and it will be interesting to hear what initially happened to the bike to cause the lockup

ATGATT is good.

@Alex, I'd like that. I'm off to Europe for a job on Sept 4 till month's end. And you haven't seen or ridden my new bike yet.

@alex - And yes, Beers. Maybe one evening next week?
