Canyon Motel, Wellsboro, PA

The Canyon Motel invited us down to check out the hotel and the riding around Pine Creek Gorge in Wellsboro, PA aka the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. The area and the motel did not disappoint. The twisty, challenging and less travelled motorcycle roads are spectacular and mostly deserted during week days!

The Canyon Motel is a relaxed, clean and comfortable home-base for exploring the Pine Creek Gorge, owner Josh Kreider and his staff go out of their way to welcome motorcycle riders and you can't beat the location right downtown Wellsboro, PA.

Canyon Motel is at 18 East Ave, Wellsboro PA 16901 - just off Main Street and right on Route 6 known to be one of the most scenic (albeit busy) highways in Pennsylvania. Mention 'EatSleepRIDE' when booking for a good price.

Rates range between $60 to $100 per night depending on the season and the room.

There's no restaurant on site, but lots to choose from nearby and free coffee and cookies at reception. Across the street is the Wellsboro Diner, a grocery store and around the corner, a pub or two.

Town of Wellsboro

Wellsboro is a quaint, typical Pennsylvania small town with everything centred around Main Street. A few years back, motorcycle tourism quieted down as the gas industry moved in to frack with their heavy trucks and unequivocal potholes. The gas is all gone and, well so are the trucks. Now Wellsboro is back in the business of welcoming motorcycle riders.

Did we mention the spectacular motorcycle roads were just a few miles away? Nothing like climbing twisty, deserted roads to the top of a the next canyon lookout to watch the eagles circle beneath you.

The Rooms

There are 3 wings at the Canyon Motel. We recommend booking a room in the front wing facing East Ave (Route 6) or in the back long-stay room with kitchenette and communal back yard. Both style rooms open to ample motorcycle parking right outside your door.

All the rooms are clean, the beds comfortable with crisp new bedding and motor court sofas thrown in for good measure.

Evenings were spent relaxing outside in front of our room, talking about the day's ride, digesting a good meal and sipping on Courvoisier from plastic cups; note to self, bring glasses.

Restaurants Nearby

There's a number of good value restaurants close by. Timeless Restaurant is popular: good Italian cuisine offering a 15% discount to motel guest.

Check out the old 'Pen Wells Pub' just around the corner for high-end dinning but surprisingly bad ambiance. 'The Steak House' is simple and serves up very good steak.

At 'Heartland's Family Restaurant', there an all you can eat salad bar included with every meal and roasted whole chicken for $12 - they don't serve beer but you can bring your own! It's that kind of town.

'The Wellsboro House and Brewery' gets great reviews and serves up the best self-proclaimed Philadelphia cheese steak. We didn't make it there, but it's on the list for the good selection of local beer on tap.
