- Route

Cedar City Utah to Mexican Hat Utah

Distance: 606.4 Km / 377.8 Mi Duration: 07:57:10

This is a great route I have done before. I really like it, nice roads and great scenery. I think everyone should do this route at least once. Maybe twice, once in each direction to make sure you get a good look at it all.

Not sure if the embedded map will work, so I am going to post some screen shots from MapQuest too.

I started out in Cedar City. Look for Highway 14 heading East out of town.

We have had some late spring storms in the west, hit a little bit of snow on the way out of town. Road was wet, but not icy, so that was good.

Hwy 14 takes you to Hwy 89 heading North.

On Hwy 89, look for Hwy 12 heading to Bryce Canyon National park.

Bryce is a nice side trip you can add on the route. It just depends on how long you have to explore the area.

There are really great views along Hwy 12. Well all along this route.

Continue on Hwy 12 up to Torrey where you pick up Hwy 24 toward Hanksville.

More great views on Hwy 24. Hwy 24 also runs through Capitol Reef National Park.

At Hanksville take Hwy 95 South. This takes you through Glen Canton recreation Area.

Again you can take a side trip here down to the lake, depends on your schedule.

After Glen Canyon, look for Hwy 261 South to Mexican Hat.

On Hwy 261 there is a 12 mile dirt detour you can do through the Valley of the gods. I did this route several years ago on a sport bike I had loaded down and had no issues. It is a well graded dirt road. So if it's been raining maybe avoid it. But when dry it should be no issue.

Here is a gallery of pictures I took here on that ride.

This is a great route, with some excellent roads and even better views.

Hope you get to see it all for yourself sometime.
