Federal Probe in to Possible Fuel Leaks on BMW R-Series

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is looking into complaints about cracks developing in the fuel pump housing of certain BMW R-Series motorcycles from the 2005 through 2008 model years. The housing seals the top of the fuel tank, so cracks can lead to fuel leaks.

The agency said it has received 28 reports of the alleged flaw and is assessing whether the problem warrants further investigation. Complaints of this sort sometimes result in safety recalls.

According to a NHTSA document the investigation includes an estimated total of 24,000 bikes including the following models and years:

2005-2008 BMW R 1200 GS ADVENTURE

2007-2008 BMW R 1200 R

2005-2008 BMW R 1200 RT

2005-2008 BMW R 1200 RT (AUTHORITY)

2005 2007 BMW R 1200 ST

2005-2007 BMW R SERIES

2005-2008 BMW R1200 GS

2006-2008 BMW R1200 GS ADVENTURE

2006-2008 BMW R1200 HP2

2006-2008 BMW R1200 R

2005-2008 BMW R1200 RT

2006-2008 BMW R1200 S

2005-2008 BMW R1200 ST

2008 BMW S 1000 RR
