WR250R or DRZ400?

Ab, Canada

My 2009 KLX 250S is conditionally sold, now the question is Yamaha WR250R or Suzuki DRZ400? Each has their strengths and weaknesses. I like the look, the 6 speed transmission, suspension and the fuel injection of WR, and the size, power and aftermarket support of the DRZ.

If the DRZ was fuel injected, or if Honda or Yamaha made comparable 400cc dual sport bikes, it would be easy question to answer. A CRF400L or WR400R would be ideal, too bad they don't exist.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm still leaning towards the WR250R, from my research it seems seems superior to the DRZ in most ways, both on and off-road.  I've ridden DRZs a fair bit, and really like them, so I'm interested in seeing how the WR compares.

One of my friends is selling the perfect DRZ, in great shape and nicely kitted out for overland travel, big tank, panniers frames, and everything you could possibly want, so it is very tempting.

A decent KTM is probably a little more than I want to spend at this time, especially one of the later, fuel injected models.

I'll keep you posted.

@Jordan - You know, you can ride the KTM slower too, right?

Luggage may be an issue, but I've never needed to carry any. And I can honestly say, my 450 EX-C is nearly 10 years old. It has never skipped a beat, aside from the one time i let the carbs get gummed up. Maintenance is pretty simple, too. Even I can change the oil. Newer ones are also EFI

Mmm, Yamaha or Suzuki... I like Suzuki DRZ400 for you, more power and it's taller and of course @Alex will want to borrow it 🙂 Why don't we get you a few bikes so you can get the seat time and post a review?

Good point @Alex, I'm also considering the KTM 450 EX-C to keep up with some of my riding buddies, but I'd prefer lower maintenance, the ease of fuel injection, more robust luggage hauling, and low cost, not sure if the KTM delivers on that front.

Plus, Sandra rides a CRF250L for most of our off-road trips, having a rocket ship KTM might lead to some pace conflict/frustration.

I want to know what's wrong with a nice KTM EX-C? That sounds like it has all that you would need.

But if you are staying with a japanese, I'd probably go the 250 if you aren't riding on roads too much
