Zero Motorcycles - Two new at AIMExpo

Orlando, Florida, United States

Is 2016 finally the year of the electric motorcycles?

Zero would like me to say yes, and their 2016 model line suggests they’re headed in the right direction.

The most exciting is undoubtedly the FX-S, an updated version of their entry level FX supermoto. The S version increases the torque from 44 to 70ft lb, which, being electric, is available across the entire rev range. It also happens to weigh less than 300lbs. Zero stated “this is bike you’ll lose your license on” and the track videos suggest it does indeed have some performance to back that up. At $10,995, it might even be the best price/performance bike out there.

The DSR is, on paper, even more of a beast with 106ft/lb of torque. However it’s also a more “sedate” bike in terms of riding position. Zero cite it as the perfect bike for going fast, either on or off road and again, the videos from Zero suggest it's certainly capable of all that. $15,995 is comparable to other adventure tourers, but it's a big price jump compared to other Zero bikes.

But, it’s not just new bikes that are getting updates. All bikes across the range now have improved range and reduced power consumption owing to their new Z-Force motors using Internal Permanent Magnets (IPM) that reduce heat build up. In short, it means you can ride the bike in a sportier manner.

And with the addition of the new optional charge tank accessory, all bikes can now also charge upto 3 times faster, which means up to 53 miles per hour of charge.

Being a long distance fan, I’m not convinced it could replace every bike, but for commuting or the odd quick thrill, the zero’s really are starting to look like electric can do it.
