Hwy 198 between Coalinga and San Lucas to Hwy 25

Distance: 198.7 Km / 123.8 Mi Duration: 02:32:21

Hwy 198 is primo riding

Hwy 198 weaves up along the coastal range as you travel from Coalinga to San Lucas. The higher it climbs the more wooded it becomes. The scenery ranges from pasture to forest.

Hwy 25 is an incredible motorcycle road

At about the halfway point of the 198 is the southern end of Hwy 25. Prepare yourself for one of the best motorcycle rides you'll find in the area heading north into Pinnacles National Park and Hollister, CA. It's also known as Bolsa Road or the Airline Highway beginning at the intersection of Peach Tree Road.

This epic motorcycle road is incredibly scenic. So back down a few clicks and soak it up. Keep in mind this is a country road so beware of locals dragging debris on tight turns. About, once a year it will get snow at the higher elevations.

Hwy 25 is a terrific surface that allows for some A+ riding. It goes from wide, great vision sweepers to gnarly turns, then opens up again. The road has a wonderful rhythm that is addictive if you find the groove, set your speed at about 65 (don't speed up for straights, don't slow down for turns) and it will mesmerize you.

Hwy 25 or Airline Road has lots of straights and enough twisties to keep it interesting

Amenities

There is not much along this road except for the occasional farm house. This area is relatively deserted. Note that there is no gas west of Coalinga. You’ll need to gas up in San Lucas or head north from Coalinga to King City.

The remoteness is part of what makes it special. And this road takes attention. Be well rested, well fed, bring water and snacks and a camera. Check your bike, tires, fluids, brakes, suspension, etc.

If you get hurt out here, it is likely, very likely, a helicopter ride- so take it easy. Make sure you have CrashLight enabled.

Gas is available in Hollister and Tres Pinos, then not at all until Coalinga. The shortest route is 100 miles one way- so plan accordingly.
