Queanbeyan to Queanbeyan via Honeysuckle creek, deep space tracking station and the Cotter.

Distance: 155.6 Km / 96.9 Mi Duration: 02:43:28

So I deciided to take the bike out for a ride around the cotter, checking out some sights on the way. Heading out of Queanbeyan steady with light traffic going south into the ACT. I finally made it south of Lanyon Homestead and opened the bike up, where the roads are 100 km/h down to Thawra bridge. A short delay waiting for traffic on the bride and I was off again, again heading south. Roads start to get some nice sweeping bends before turning off for Honeysuckle creek.

At the top of the hill at Honeysuckle Creek is a awesome camping ground, however I imagine it gets quite cold up there at night. Honeysuckle creek was where a communications dish operated by NASA was situated and played a part in beaming the moon landings to the world

I left Honeysuckle Creek, back down the hill, heading back to the small village of Thawra. Here there is a small general store, where if required you can get fuel. Its also a good meeting point at the south end of what is known as the Cotter (although the cotter area is actually at the northern ppoint of the cotter road). Heading north, again on 100km/h roads, there are a few nice sweeping bends, passin the Tidbinbilla nature reserve. I turned right, heading towards the Deep Space Centre where there is a small cafe. It's a bit basic and isn't going to win any awards for the food anytime soon. The view there is good however. This place opened after Honeysuckle Creek was closed.

After my slightly disapointing meal, I went on from here, heading north, this time the road changes between 100km/h down to 50 km/h through some of the camping areas. The corners are tighter in this area, but still great fun. Just be aware of gravel on the road, especially after heavy rain.

I left the cotter, heading back to Queanbeyan via the most direct route past the lake and the city of Canberra. Overall a good ride. Very popular ride for locals and no doubt I will be doing it again.

@NotHisRealName I recently moved from Dubbo where the roads a boring, down to Queanbeyan. The roads are a bit more exciting and fun. There is also a good route to the coast with some fantastic roads.
