Ice Riding on Ghost Lake, AB

Had a great day learning about riding on ice with friends over the weekend. The grip with the studded ice racing tires is amazing. Finished off with a BBQ on the ice and beers in a nearby pub. Not a not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternnon in February!

I remember the first time I saw someone doing that on the lake... I was amazed. So cool. A friend of mine who rides off road thought he would try it this winter. He did up his tires himself and ended up losing a lot of his studs by the time he was done. But he learned what he needed to do to fix it, and had a blast doing it.

A great day of riding, the views on the other side of the lake were great, hopefully we'll be able to do it again soon. We just wore our regular riding kit, and as far as low sides go, I don't know as I did not fall off, but the ice feels pretty hard.. The grip is really outstanding, you can really push it far and lean the bike waaaaayyyy over.

Do wear special gear for ice riding?

So what is low-siding like on ice? I have this idea that sliding is less dangerous and as a result, way more fun as long as you don't get your leg scrapped by the studded tires.

I am so jealous right about now. I really want to try ice racing and would love to know just how "sticky" those studded tires are.
