Daytona Supercross -- Things Have Changed

It feels like no time at all since we were watching the first round of the 2013 supercross series in Anaheim. We're now 10 rounds in and we've seen 5 different winners in the 450 class and as of the last round in Daytona, the red points leader plate has changed hands for the first time.

Davi Millsaps surprised everyone by winning A1. The bigger surprise perhaps being that he remained consistent and held onto the points lead for another 9 rounds, even taking a second win in San Diego. But, the force that is Ryan Villopoto on a dirt bike has worked his way back to the front of the championship after some tough races.

Daytona is one of the "special" rounds on the supercross calendar. Taking place during bike week, the track takes over the infield of the famous circuit that normally sees events like the Daytona 500 and Rolex 24 hour marathon on it's banked asphalt surface. It's a long, tough track and it takes it toll over race distance.

Villopoto grabbed the holeshot in the 20-lap main event, but a small mistake early on pointed him off track and when he rejoined he was in third behind Ken Roczen and Justin Barcia. Within a few laps though, he had made his way back into the lead and never looked back (and was as much as 9 seconds ahead at one point).

Many of the top guys struggled. Although they were fast all day, Stewart and Reed each had incidents and eventually ended up in 8th and 5th respectively. Dungey persevered to snag the last step of the podium. As the points leader going into the race, Millsaps couldn't manage any better than 10th -- with RV winning, Davi now finds himself 2 points behind in the championship battle.

450SX Point Standings

1 1 Ryan Villopoto - 202

2 18 David Millsaps - 200

3 5 Ryan Dungey - 188

7 7 James Stewart - 135

8 29 Andrew Short - 122

9 10 Justin Brayton - 104

10 20 Broc Tickle - 99

The East Coast 250SX series started off as most expected, Dean Wilson snagged his first win and looked ready to dominate the series. But, going into Daytona he wasn't the guy with the points lead. Wil Hahn is putting forth a serious challenge for the title and remains the points leader coming out of Daytona after finishing 2nd. Rookie Jeremy Martin put in a great ride to take 3rd just ahead of Wilson, who had to settle for 4th.

Marvin Musquin finally earned himself a supercross win, something everyone was expecting from the French motocross champion. He did it in dominating fashion, bursting out of the gate and leading all 15 laps and crossing the finish line (in style) with 8 seconds separating him from 2nd place.
