How CRASHLIGHT® Leverages Machine Learning & Sensitivity MODES

CRASHLIGHT® 2.0: improved crash detection.

CRASHLIGHT MODES For iOS and Android

CRASHLIGHT MODES For iOS and Android

CRASHLIGHT has come a long way

CRASHLIGHT is a pro feature available in the EatSleepRIDE app. Using the smartphone sensors in your device, we can automatically detect your motorcycle crash and notify up to 3 contacts with your geo-location. Because when you need help, every second counts. Read the FAQ

When we started building CRASHLIGHT smartphones weren’t that common among motorcycle riders. They were expensive, fragile devices. We carried ours in our pockets, bundled in bubble wrap. Today, the device is more often tossed in a top-box than coddled and protected.

Smartphones are indispensable to our motorcycling lives. Every time we stop, we pull them out to check text or email, check the map or take a picture. Some of us have forgone the traditional GPS and use a bar-mounted phone to do all our turn by turn navigation. And, I've even ran across one guy who custom built a mount on his front forks so that he could use his phone as an action camera. The EatSleepRIDE app was developed to respond to those needs.

Crowd-Sourced Crash Detection

In the beginning, CRASHLIGHT was designed to be carried in the breast pocket where the body acts as a cushion to absorb 'noise'. However, riders are carrying their devices in different ways which requires advanced crash detection mechanisms.

To respond to demand, ESR has enhanced our feedback mechanisms to include inputs for machine learning. By understanding how different riders carry their devices and how different bikes set off crash signals, we're using the intelligence of the crowd to create better technologies for motorcycle crash detection. When you save your ride, you may see these three questions:

1. What kind of bike are you riding?

-Sport bike, Cruiser, Dirt bike

2. Where are you carrying the device?

-Chest pocket, pannier, back pack

3. Did anything happen?

-Did you hit a pot hole, did you slam on your brakes, did you crash?

Whether you're subscribed to CRASHLIGHT or not, providing data is your chance to help make motorcycling safer. The data you provide helps drive insights to how different bikes crash. This will lead to future understanding of predictive models so we can alert you to danger before it happens. The data you provide might help save someone’s life. We hope it's worth an extra thirty seconds of your time, if not, leave it blank and your ride will save normally.

Adjusting MODE sensitivity in both iOS and Android

To provide riders with flexibility, MODES enable you to adjust the CRASHLIGHT sensitivity depending on where you carry the device and how you use it.

Both iOS and Android clients have three MODES today: High (the default), Medium and Low. You can change this at any time, even during a ride, and we will remember the last mode you used.

On Android, the MODE can be changed by selecting the 'ADJUST SENSITIVITY' button on the GO RIDE screen.

In iOS, tap Menu > CRASHLIGHT to adjust sensitivity.

It is recommended to leave the MODE on High to start. If you're one of the few who experience a false alarm during a ride, try changing sensitivity to Medium and then to Low depending on where you carry the device.

Riding a deep roaring cruiser or doing intense riding like adventure riding or dirt bike riding requires Low MODE, medium vibration requires Medium MODE and if normal riding with the device in your breast pocket, use High MODE.

Self-cancel & Management for false alarms

CRASHLIGHT works by monitoring the sensors and constantly checking a number of signals when your record your ride. As we’ve come to support new devices, and new forms of use, we've had to make changes to reflect different types of usage that can trigger false alarms.

CRASHLIGHT has a cooling off mechanism. If a crash is detected the alarm will sound. However, don't worry, if you continue to ride normally, CRASHLIGHT will self-cancel 99.1% of the time.

One of the greatest solitudes of the world is the loss of community. What we can do together for motorcycle safety is bigger than what we can do alone. Thank you for helping in making motorcycling safer.

LOVE crashlight and I've subscribed for 2 years. The Family loves it too. I had a crash last year and it worked about 20 miles from the house. The bike was totalled and I was ok just disoriented. My brother-in law got there and helped me handle the police and the jerk who rear ended me. Keep doing what you're doing team

The self cancel is so nice! I had a crash alert go off just recently and as I continued to ride it stopped buzzing my phone. In fear of alerts being sent I pulled over to check and to my surprise the ride record screen appeared normal. Yeah for progress!
