2009 Buell Blast

Buell Blast (2009) - Orange

The Buell Blast is an american made motorcycle manufactured by Buell Motorcycle and ex-Harley-Davidson engineer Erik Buel from 2000-2009. It was marketed as an entry-level bike so that it could attract more riders to the brand and Harley-Davidson in particular.

The Blast has an air-cooled single OHV, 492cc engine. The 5 speed transmission Blast could output 34hp and 30 ft lbs of torque at 6,500 rpm all while using a tensioned belt drive. The 360 lb (163 kg) bike has two height profiles, standard at 27.5 in (700 mm) and low profile at 25.5 in (650 mm).

Body work for the Buell Blast was made of plastic with Suryln coating, the same stuff that coats golfballs. This coating gave the Blast a better resistance to falling then other conventional motorcycle bodywork.

In 2009 the Buell Blast's era came to a crushing end. An ad was put out featuring a Buell Blast being squished by an automobile crusher. Later in 2010, a limited quantity of crushed Blast cubes were offered for sale and were individually signed and numbered by Erik Buell.

It was a terrible name, if nothing else. But yes, it's a shame to see Erik's work end up like this. In the end, I think it was doomed to failure. I don't recall the cost, but I dare say Honda /etc were always cheaper (and better specced). Not only that, it wouldn't attract riders to the Harley brand as it's fundamentally not a harley, despite what they might say.

A sad end to a bike, I don't know what I'd do with a 360 lb cube but someone might have a use for it as an art piece.
