Fall is almost here, and that means you’ve got to do some prep work for your bike. If you live in an area with big seasonal weather changes, you’ll need to get started pretty soon. Cooler weather demands more than simply donning heavier clothes to fight off the cold. It also means changing road conditions, traffic patterns, and motorcycle maintenance needs.

It’s time to get your bike ready. As a motorcyclist, what do you need to know about fall temperatures, maintenance, and safety? And, perhaps more importantly, where should you go once you’ve geared up? Read on to find out.

Get the Basics Covered

By the time fall rolls around, you’ve probably put a good many miles on your bike. Summer joyrides add up quickly, though, and you’re likely due for some basic tune-ups. Make to check on the following:

• ____Your oil. Clean oil keeps your engine happy. Make sure things are looking good and your levels are high. If not, change it! Luckily, changing your own oil isn’t too difficult, and you can find guides online.

• __Other fluids. __Brake fluids, etc. Make sure they’re all up to snuff and ready the cold weather.

• __Rust. __Inspect your bike thoroughly for signs of rust. If you spot any, take care of it yourself (if you have the time and ability to) or take it into the shop. Small bits of rust can grow during the cold months, especially if your bike alone in the off-season.

• __Misc. exterior stuff. __Make sure your handles are grippable, your seat isn’t cracked, etc. All those little bits can turn into big problems quickly in the cold.

Check for Bigger Upgrades

Google your bike’s model to see if any parts have been recalled, or if you’ll need to do anything major. Some of those announcements can slip under the radar while you’re spending the hot months riding the highway like a beast.

Check Your Paperwork

Is your insurance up to date? Do you have current stickers on your plates? These things can be easy to forget, and neglecting them can lead so big fines and legal fees.

Check Your Gear

You bike’s not the only thing that needs maintenance. Your boots, jacket, etc. should be unripped. And keep in mind that leather is safer than some other materials because it’s more likely to make your body slide smoothly on the ground in case of an accident

And, of course, your helmet should be in tip-top shape: no cracks, no dents, no coating of bug coats blurring your vision, etc. You’ve got to be able to see clearly to ride safely. Check Your Routes

Seasons affect your routes. As things cool, some places become less safe. If you’re in the midwest, you could swing a little farther south to catch some heat as it retreats.
