The area is part of the famous Appalachian Mountains and consists of Catoctin Mountain and the Catoctin Mountain Park.

Catoctin Mountain Park has 25 mi (40.2 km) of hiking trails, and many roads perfect for technical and relaxed motorcycle touring. The park is famously known for the President's retreat at Camp David, but you are more likely to see deers, bear, turkeys and trout swimming in the streams than the president.

In the summer be sure to visit Cunningham Falls State Park west of Thurmont to take a dip in the largest water cascades in Maryland.
