How Do You Break a Land Speed Record?

The answer is a bike, a bike with a jet engine!  The attempt to beat the record will happen at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, July 11-14, 2013. This year is the 20th anniversary event which makes the Festival of Speed an absolute 'must attend' experience for all motorcycle racing enthusiasts in UK.

Britian's Richard Brown is going to attempt to break the motorcycle land speed record (LSR) which currently sits at 376 mph (605.697 km/h) by American, Rocky Robbinson. Browns' bike "Jet Reaction" is built using a re-tooled 930 kilowatt helicopter engine and an added afterburner that will spray fuel into the exhaust to generate even more thrust.

Brown hopes the vehicle will hit 450 mph. Brown, narrowly missed beating the record in 1999 at the Bonneville Salt Flats using a custom-built rocket bike.

To beat the record, you have to manage two journeys, the average speed is measured against two runs in the opposite direction counting as your combined attempt.

In Brown's 1999 failed attempt, the team was forced to use tires instead of aluminum wheels and one of them blew out.

Brown is not the only one attempting to break the LSR, James Toseland also of Britian, a former 2 time Superbike Championship racer, turned pianist, will attempt to break the record with his jet-engine, wheel driven bike "The 52 Express". Perhaps as well to point out that Richard Brown won't actually be trying to beat the record of 376mph at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year but he will be in attendance with Jet Reaction at the event!
