Yukon is supposed to be the best kept secret in travel, so we’ll try not to give away any more than necessary here. From Whitehorse, you’ll motor to Carcross, the history-steeped town en route to the Klondike and terminus of the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad. Check the Carcross Desert off your list, and sneak in a hike or a mtn bike blast. Then it’s off through the rocky White Pass and across the border before the descent to Skagway, in coastal Alaska. Where to stop

Kill some time in Skagway, before catching the ferry to Haines, Alaska. Here, whales and eagles photobomb your selfies while you try to get near the grizzly bears snapping spawning salmon in mid-flight. The aforementioned Carcross Desert is more a range of sand dunes, and being so far north is a must.

If you want to make it a loop, you'll need a couple of days. You can return to Canada through the Haines Pass, past killer views of Tatshenshini-Alsek Park and Kluane National Park and Reserve, as you make for Haines Junction. Whitehorse is just a short hop from there.
