Go Bad or Go Home

Distance: 326.4 Km / 203.4 Mi Duration: 04:30:12

As tempting as it is to mountain you to death here, we choose the badlands for our second Alberta route. This classic prairie ride, through miles and miles of farmland over straight and flat roads, may seem like a bore, vastness of sky and scape notwithstanding. Photo by http://amainsider.com

They call this the Dinosaur Trail. The moment, without warning, you plunge from Earth’s breadbasket into Earth’s guts, this first taste of the ancient Red Deer River Valley Badlands will remain one of the highlights of your riding life.

Horizontal, multi-coloured layers of sedimentary rock and mud along the valley walls will remind you of a shrunken Grand Canyon. Photo credit http://blog.buzzbishop.com

Connecting the North Dinosaur Trail to the South Dinosaur Trail in Kneehill County is a little ferry. On Highway 838, you'll need to take the Bleriot Ferry across the Red Deer River. Count on the few-minute ride on the Bleriot Ferry to run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily from the May long weekend to September long weekend.

Where To Stop

The river valley around Drumheller is pocked with abandoned coal mines and other remnants of Alberta’s highly fossilized past, so stop and check ‘em out. Visit the delightfully phallic Hoodoos, and if you have a geologist streak in you, take note that the entire Valley is infested with fossils which are forever being exposed by the rains.

Grab North Dinosaur Trail up to the river ferry, then head south and head back to Calgary via Balzac. Explore the ghost town of Dorothy, and follow the "Eleven Bridges Road" from Rosebud to Wayne for lunch at the Last Chance Saloon. Interesting stops also include Top Rocker Motorcycle, Star Mine Suspension Bridge and the Tyrell Museum.

@debbiewymenga Sure! You can start recording your ride anywhere along or near the route. There are virtual checkpoints along every #HD100 route, and as long as you're able to hit at least 80% of these checkpoints and be actively recording your ride while doing so, it's all good.

Question can you start anywhere along the route and end up back where you started? I live in Edmonton so to go to Calgary then complete the route and then back to Edmonton makes for a long day! If I start st the northern tip of route then not quite as long! 🙂

Hey @ShakerNorm thanks for the tips!

If you're spending the day - go 'round the whole Dinosaur Trail - check out the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology - Probably the BEST Dinosaur museum in the world! And 11 Bridges Road is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bridges in the shortest distance! At the Rosedeer Hotel - Have a great meal and a quart jar of beer at the Last Chance Saloon, and you can even spend a night in the haunted Hotel. If you're interested in History - check out the Atlas Mine, too!

I just completed this ride today exactly as shown and did not receive any points for it being completed. This app is very hit and miss for completed routes and rides. Disappointing.

I highly suggest everyone goes to Wayne bar, great little ride to add to this one. Only about 15 minutes outside of Drumheller lots of Corners and 11 bridges crossing the creek

@AlbertaBeef Yes the route is available now. The Bleriot Ferry operates 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from late April to the May long weekend. Then 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily from the May long weekend to September long weekend. Ride safe.

@freedombehindbars, thanks for your note. You can start recording your ride anywhere along or near the route. There are virtual checkpoints along every #HD100 route, as long as you're able to hit at least 80% of these checkpoints and be actively recording your ride while doing so, it's all good.

If you're doing a Route Challenge or if you log more KMs (min 50km) you'll get points for both the Route Challenge and the Ride Challenge.

We're very sorry to hear you had trouble collecting your points and about the beacon not working at the dealership. Please contact our Support Team in-app Me > Settings > Get Support or via email at feedback at eatsleepride dot com so we can troubleshoot. We'll be more than happy to help you with this.

@H-D®100 Great, thanks for fixing this. So just to be clear, this route is not really available until the May long weekend?

Finished the route didn't get points for it and Calgary Harley's beacon is not working yet

Also wondering if I can combine km challenge with a route? Say I'm riding from home to jasper and down to Banff and back home if I log the whole ride would I get the km challenge as well as the route?

So if I live in Drumheller, leave from drum and ride the route back to drum will I get the challenge?

The start and end points don't appear to have been updated. it would really be good to avoid the sense urban areas.

Thanks for your note, @gerrybadham. You can start recording your ride at home. Just make sure you ride and record the full 'Go Bad or Go Home' route. There are virtual checkpoints along the route, as long as you're able to hit 80% of these checkpoints it's all good!

Sorry to hear you're having any trouble with the maps. We always welcome feedback and we'd be happy to help you with anything we can. Just send us a note in-app Me > Settings > Get Support with the details so we can troubleshoot.

Why can't we start and finish at home? In my riding world that's were all rides start and finish. As long as we can ride the route picked with such crapy maps that's an achievement

@Chivo @win @AlbertaBeef The route's start and end points have been updated.
