Lobster Chase, Fundy Trail, New Brunswick

Distance: 438.9 Km / 273.5 Mi Duration: 06:44:14

New Brunswick is East of ordinary (hear that, Quebec?)!

This motorcycle roads runs you from Amherst to Moncton to Saint John finishing up in Saint Stephen where you'll take in one of world’s most stunning coastlines along the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. The province has everything but coconut palms meaning ocean, beaches, mountains, rivers, cities, small towns, top-notch grub and tides three floors high.

Once a brutal land of hardscrabble coal miners, fish canners and steel benders, New Brunny, has in recent decades, re-fashioned itself as a motorcycle riders’ destination par excellence.

Acadie, French and English cultures abound, so the pubs and food stops are always fulfilling. While it’s subject to similar weather-related lunacies as its Maritime cousins, I discovered (in a luxury beige minivan) that you can often dodge the rains – a weather radar smartphone app is indispensable – and treat your soul to a series of pleasures sublime.

Our enquiries with motorcycle riders who’ve ridden and/or lived here pointed to the Maine to Nova Scotia run, along the Bay of Fundy. And let us count that as a cordial invitation to our American reader-riders.

This is a fun ride with lots of Bay of Fundy activities along the way. If you've never surfed for minutes at a time, well, put it this way: If you catch the tidal bore-wave that comes in twice a day, and ride it all the way, that'll count as more wave-time than most west coast surfers get in a season. Board rentals are no sweat.

Then there's seafood. It's the culture, so you'll not lack for that. Just watch it on the curves here, as the weather likes to play up and greasy roads can de-verticalize the scenery-gazing rider in an instant.

Where to stop

The 18km-long Fundy Trail Parkway won’t be 100% completed until 2018, but the bits already open have great lookouts for watching the 32-foot-high tide come in and out of the Bay on the six-hour cycle. It starts 10km east of the village of St Martins along Hwy 1, (north cost of Fundy). Be sure to get off Hwy 1 and onto Hwy 175 between Penfield and Lepreau for some photo opps. And surf that bore, my friends.
