Is Thinking ...

How do you adjust your mirrors? To see behind you or to see the lanes on either side of you?

SInce we are all individual physically and ride many different types of machines, it is hard to give a definitive answer but what I try to do is make sure I cover what can't easily be seen in a shoulder check and hopefully some overlap of the two takes place. Constant checks and head on a swivel, just like the fighter pilots-situational awareness.

@marina I think that is a relative term, defined as directly behind you as well as behind you on a multi lane road (beside) it is tricky to get mirrors adjusted best to do it while moving (I know sounds unsafe) then once adjusted you should not have to readjust unless they are hit..

@devon @jampy00 so I read that mirrors should be adjusted so you see the traffic beside you as well as behind you. Thoughts?

I use bar end mirrors so I can quite a bit behind me,but as stated shoulder check is always best, I still never fully trust what I see in a mirror...

Done right, there should be a bit of both - You can move on the bike to change your viewing angle but nothing beats the shoulder check if you need to see what's around you.

Good question Marina, motorcycle mirrors are tricky to work with and I find they take some time to trust. I adjust them to see just outside my arms and keep them level with road. Of course adjust them when you are level and really just keep doing your shoulder checks!
