this UNESCO site is the most famous site of Norse of Viking settlement in North America outside of Greenland dating to the year 1000 CE.

Run by Parks Canada, l'Anse aux Meadows represents the farthest-known extent of European exploration and settlement of the New World before the voyages of Christopher Columbus almost 500 years later. The name, derived from the French, “Jellyfish Cove” was discovered in the 1960’s by archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad and her husband; it symbolizes the completion of the encirclement of the earth by humanity.

It’s a very long motorcycle ride, but worth it if you are into Vikings and very long motorcycle rides.

When you arrive, behold the visitor center, a magnificent wooden building with beautiful architecture. Underground homes, gift shop, recreated village and excellent washrooms are all good reasons to visit even if it is raining, which it often is. Admission and parking are free.

Combine your visit to L'Anse aux Meadows with a visit to Quirpon Island for mind-blowing icebergs sites along what is called iceberg alley. This is the extreme north of Newfoundland where the strip of ocean extends all the way south from Baffin Bay and along the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Every iceberg seen in Newfoundland is spotted here first. Oh Canada!
