Did you ride to work today?

Well if you didn't… neither did I (it's my day off and I stayed home with my daughter). And I'm not sure if Ride to Work Day makes much of a difference in NYC right now; but I could be missing something (feel free to enlighten me). However I AM in favor of riding to work on a regular basis, and riding to do errands, or go tot he movies… For me I ride wherever I go that doesn't require lugging a lot of stuff (or a baby car seat). So what I will do for RTW Day is give you the Top Five Reasons (from this video) to ride to work more often:

5. "It's easier…" For people who don't ride to work, it seems like a lot to do first thing in the morning: get your gear on, pack your bike, fight your way through traffic. But once you do it a few times, it's actually SO MUCH EASIER than lugging your stuff or squeezing into a packed subway car.
4. "Really easy to get through traffic." Compared to driving or taking a bus or cab, traffic is a breeze. And although lane splitting is NOT legal in NY, cross town streets (like 56th) that are one way have so much room for passing while the car traffic is gridlocked.
3. "It's cost efficient." A metrocard ride is more than $2. My scooter can travel 50 miles on $2 worth of unleaded. You do the math. But even if you ride a gas guzzling Aprilia RSV4, you can do most NY commutes to Manhattan from Brooklyn on $2 worth of gas, and save the extra $0.38 for knee pucks.
2. "You can get to work when you want to get to.." (instead of relying on unreliable trains, buses, or car traffic). You're in control of your own schedule.

And for the number ONE reason to ride to work more often:

1. "First thing in the morning, I don't want to deal with people breathing on me."

And who could possibly argue with that?

Cheers.
