Becoming a Lean Mean Riding Machine

The EatSleepRIDE App is as diverse as the motorcycle community that it serves; many people say it's like five apps in one, and everyone is bound to use it differently. The data nerds among us tend to be most interested in getting their ride analytics.

EatSleepRIDE Mobile provides a highly secure platform for riders to record a wide range of data relating to bike performance, fuel economy, personal riding style, routes and locations, including calculating a rider's lean angle.

Lean Angle Calculation

We use internal iOS sensors to calculate a rider's position in relation to the road, which provides the lean angle calculation.

Where should you keep the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to collect accurate readings?

Readings may differ based on where you keep your device; it's important to make sure the device is snug in a spot where it won't be moving around.

The most accurate readings have been taken when the device is oriented screen- facing-upwards, lying flat towards the sky in a tank bag. We also achieved some very accurate readings with the device mounted on the handlebars - just make sure you're watching the road.

Riders who subscribe to CrashLight can do either but it's best to keep the device in a breast pocket in the event the rider is separated from the bike in a crash.

If you see a wonky lean angle reading i.e. above 90 degrees (plus or minus), it may be due to an adjustment in the device's position when you're holding it in your hand just before or after your ride. Or maybe you're doing cartwheels on your bike, which we would be very interested in hearing more about.

How have you been using the lean angle, and what kind of readings are you getting? Let us know in the comment below.

I just sent you a message regarding wonky lean angles and your auto reply email led me to this post.

I ride with my iphone fixed to the bike using a RAM mount, specifically on a ball mount in the centre of the steering yoke.

I can position the phone flat/horizontal in relation to the bike, or vertical, or any angle between. I usually ride with it at around a 30-40 degree angle (imagine horizontal, screen facing the sky, is zero degrees, I tip the phone towards me by around 30 or 40 degrees as this gives me the best viewing angle when sitting on the bike, if I was to tip it by 90 degrees it would be completely vertical)

The lean angles I am getting in the recordings are crazy, It shows me between 75 and -75 virtually all the time, even when I am travelling straight along a straight road.

\Next time I go out I will try it flat/horizontal/screen facing the sky, and see what the results are like.

I have been using it, but once my phone locks it stops recording any information at all ๐Ÿ˜ž I love the app though!
