British Racing Green BMW R100TR

BMW R 100 RT Toronto, Canada

A lucky drive-by in my neighbourhood revealed a uniquely well maintained and seemingly original BMW R100RT. This bike debuted in the 1978, at the time considered the first of the modern-tourers. The gas tank alone could do you for 200 miles between fuel stops and luggage room was enough for at least a week. A bike to get you across Europe by way of a few mountain ranges.

The R100RT was referred to as a "boxer" obviously for it's boxy appearance. Of the era, Yamaha and Suzuki also had their version of boxers on the road.  I have to say, I really like the boxer look. The R100RT sports a big-valve engine and a massive fairing with large wide handlebars.

It had plenty of power. Cruising speed was about 90 to 100 mph and apparently you can really go hard in the turns with this bike when balanced. That is to say, if the weight of the paniers is not balanced correctly, the bike could snake on the road. A known issue.

The fairing was so big, BMW fitted little ventilators to blow a cooling breeze over the rider. You can also see lockable stash boxes inside the fairing on both the left and right side. Such a good use of space.

Gaging by the rider's fashion gear on the bike, and the back protector. I'd wager to say it's a young rider, captivated by the power and retro style of the boxer. I'd love to know the history of this bike.
