Posterior Protection for Hot Days

Beadrider Seat Cover

Beadrider Seat Cover

A recent trip to West Virginia proved to be an excellent test for the Beadrider Motorcycle Seat Cover I had recently purchased. The stock seat on my FZ6 feels more like a pleather-covered board at times, so I normally ride with an Airhawk Comfort Seat and a lot of Ibuprofen.

The downside to the Airhawk and similar products is that they don't flow much, if any, air across your posterior. The combination of heat, sweat and friction on your rear end can lead to the much complained about "monkey butt".

The Beadrider looks similar to the bead seats you'll find for cars, and the basic premise is the same. Lift your behind, allowing air to flow, and you'll keep your bottom cool and comfortable. Although the beads are reasonably hard, I did find that I had less pressure pain than sitting on the bare seat. I believe part of this comes from the more solid beads allowing you to shift pressure points during a ride, versus a seat that conforms and keeps much of the same pressure regardless of how your bottom shifts.

Beadrider makes two types of seats, the "Classic" with less expensive wooden beads and an "Ultimate" version that uses reinforced ceramic composite beads. The price difference between the two isn't much, around $18.

I will still use my Airhawk once the temperatures drop, but for hot weather riding, I do recommend you check out the Beadrider.

@alex On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are the sheepskin seat covers, which will certainly give your ride a completely different look. Personally, I'm not as worried about how the seat cover looks, because it's going to be underneath me while I ride.

Hate the monkey butt. Nice to hear these things work. I've not tried one - I can't get over the look.
