Across the West, Day 2

Distance: 683.2 Km / 425.7 Mi Duration: 09:28:39

One of the ambitions for the trip was to go North and make the crossing where the great basin wasn't a thing. Also, I've wanted to see Crater lake since I did an Oregon State report in like 5th grade, so let's go do that. If you're in the area you should ride Mt. Lassen, but I just did that a few weeks ago, so I explored a bit on the way North.

Good start.

On the way I decided to stop at Lava beds national park. Not much of a motorcycle park, mostly for caving, but continuing the volcano theme from Mt. Lassen.

Beds of Lava? Shield volcanoes are less visually striking and less fun to ride than cinder cones.

Met a bunch of bikers there on their way South that insisted getting to Crater lake that day was ambitious. Hah. In the words of a wise Bay area rider: You can't ride all day if you don't ride all day.

Crater lake totally lives up to the hype and is worth a visit.

At some point a retired rider offered his advise that crossing Oregon on 26 would be more interesting and less slabby than 20, so instead of stopping at Bend, I found a local back road that took me up to Prineville for the night.

I disturbed several local teenagers making out to take this shot of Prineville.

Sore butt but satisfying day. Starting East for real tomorrow.
