It's a new game! Here's how you collect points and win prizes all summer long

What do I need to do to complete a Cannonball Rides Challenge and rack up points?

This is ESR's early version of Challenges and the functionality is very new.

That said it may be a bit tricky to get your first Cannonball Challenge but once you have it under your belt you'll be carving all the way through Challenges across Canada.

We want to hear from you, tell us what you think and how we can make it better. Keep reading to learn more.

How does it work?

On an Apple iPhone device, tap the "Challenges tab" at the bottom of the screen, and Join the game. Now, select your province and the Cannonball Ride you'd like to attempt. When you open the ride you'll see a map, and pins marking the location visits on the map. You will need to visually follow the line and head to each checkpoint.

On an Android device, things are a bit different. First, 1) go to Go Ride and hit the ride record button, 2) then navigate to the Challenge you'd like to do and start riding. That's it. When you approach the first location, you'll see an opportunity to hit the CHECK IN button.

Remember! Before you start riding, go to the Go Ride screen and tap the red button to record your ride. By doing so, you launch route tracking on both platforms.

Visit each location en route. Upon arrival to each visit location, you'll be asked to check in to verify you were there! Tap the CHECK IN button.

You can do the route and stop in to any visit location in any direction. You decide.

Once all visits are completed, save your ride to collect points.

If the route is a loop, you only need to visit locations once to collect your points!

Officially there is a time limit to complete the rides, but currently, the timer is not in effect, yet. You can take as long as you'd like to complete the location visits. (Don't tell everyone.)

I am not seeing the Challenges!

Tap the Challenges tab at the bottom of the screen to open the games. If you're not seeing the games, it's probably because you're not running the latest version of the ESR app. Go get it now!

The current version for Android is 3.10.1 available in Google Play, that goes the same for iOS 3.10.1, available in the App Store.

I see a grey JOIN button but can't join the game.

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to view the Official Rules. Once you reach the bottom, the button will turn blue and make it possible for you to join the game.

Do I need to record and save my ride to collect points for a Challenge?

Yes! To start tracking, you must tap the red record button. This will trigger the ride tracking and record your duration and your distance. Once you complete the ride, you must save it. Upon saving the ride, you'll see the points pop-up screen!

Tap the centre red button to record your ride!

How do I follow a Cannonball route?

To follow a route, you must first select your province, then the route you'd like to do. Open the Challenge and page and expand the map. You'll need to navigate by the route polyline which is the drawn line on the map. Yes, we realize this is not idea and before long, you'll be able add your route to the Go Ride screen or map. It will look like this.

Is there a specific time limit to complete the route?

Officially, since the begining of the Cannonball Rides, there has been an honour system time limit to complete the Cannonball Rides. However, today, the ESR app does not prevent you from completing the ride in a specific time window (for now). The time limit will be coming in a subsequent release.

Once you start recording your route, you'll be able to take as much time as you need to complete the Challenge. Be aware, we will release an update that will control the "time to complete" soon so if you're not careful you can lose your progress and be forced to start again without collecting points. So play it safe, complete your Challenge in the "time to complete".

The blackout period is a timer that is in effect. The blackout prevents you from repeating the same Challenge for 24-hours. Once all the checkpoints are reached, and you receive your points for the Challenge, you'll have to wait 24-hours to try again. Want more? Try a different Challenge!

How much points do I get for each Challenges?

Always check the Official Rules for the time to complete the Challenges. Here's a cheat sheet for you.

250 Points awarded for any 250 mile (400 kms) Challenge and must be completed within 12 hours. You can repeat any ride after a 48 hour blackout period.

How much data does the ESR app use?

Data usage depends on the type of activity. In short, not very much.

  • Maps - Using maps and the biggest data consumption. Data is used only when the screen is active. To save on data, load your maps before you go out and ride while on a wifi network, this hack will bring your data consumption for viewing maps down to zero. If you're loading new maps, while out and about, it could go as high as a few Mb
  • Location Checkins - You need your data on to activate a Location CHECK IN. Data required is very little (in the volume of bytes each) and amounts to 1Mb max per day
  • CRASHLIGHT - Requires a limited amount of data, maybe 4 to 12Kb per crash detected
  • Ride Uploads - Depending on the length of the ride, the amount of data varies, but if you save a ride on cellular, it will upload a 10 hour ride and chew up as little as 500Kb of data

How do I download a GPX file for the route?

Some users may want to import the Cannonball Routes to another app or hardware device to get turn-by-turn guidance. That's why we've provided the GPX file for each route for you.

To get the GPX file you want, plan ahead. Load the story Cannonball Rides x Joe Rocket Canada Challenge is 70 of the best motorcycle road in Canada

  1. Navigate to the Challenge you want 2) scroll down to the bottom of the page, and in the comments section, you'll see a link to the GPX file. Download that file and import it into your GPX route tool of choice.

How do I solve GPS issues with some Samsung devices?

You may see that some Samsung devices are showing wrong speeds or jagged polylines which means there's a GPX fix problem when running in the background. First, you'll need to enable your battery usage to allow ESR to run in the background on your device.

Next, you can try this little hack. Open and run Google Maps on your device. Because the Google Maps app is white-listed on your device, it will manage location in the background for all apps using location. This should improve GPS fix issues and keep the ESR app running in the background without issue. Try this new test case and drop us a line in app from Me > Settings > Get Support to let us know how it goes.
