Great Pennsylvania Back Roads - Taking in Hyner View Lookout

Distance: 244.3 Km / 152.2 Mi Duration: 04:09:48

There are so many great roads in PA, it's hard to just pick some to ride. This was the ride we took recently.

It's really just a big loop around from (nearly) Wellsboro, down to Renovo and then back up again.

There's literally not a single bad mile of road in this ride. Surfaces are mostly great, and the ones that aren't are really only so by comparison. There's few cars and (as you'd expect) awesome scenery. Expect to be tired at the end of the day. It's not that far, but the constant turns can be demanding. The pro-tip is to stop often and make sure you are hydrated. Lapses in concentration can be nasty.

If, like us, you want a little more you can take the side trip along the Wykoff Run Road, and we recommend you do, too.

Another important detour on this route is to make sure you head up to the Hyner View lookout. Just off Hyner Run Road, the entrance looks a little gnarly as it turns sharply back on itself. The road up is also pretty narrow, effectively a wide single track even though it's two way. Take your time. Some of the turns are sharp and the short wire fence isn't going to stop you falling down some pretty steep hillsides if you overcook it.

That all makes it sound pretty nasty: It's not. It's a great road up and one you should definitely take the time for. The view of the Susquehanna river at the top is definitely worth it.

There's plenty of places to stop along the way, too.

Cherry Springs State Park is a designated Dark Sky area. You can even camp and stare-gaze for a modest fee. It also has some of the cleanest rest rooms I've ever seen in a public park and even WiFi. Remarkable, given the fact there is just no cell signal up here.

For Food, you can also hit Yesterday's Restaurant in Renovo, PA. It's not the finest cuisine on the planet, but it's good, solid pub/diner fare served with a smile in a back-in-time ambience.
