Campbell Hill: The Highest Point in Ohio

I really enjoy taking day trips on the Suzuki, they are great ways to explore unique areas of Ohio on a budget; I liked to call them "trips on a tank".  Last week I rode to <a href="http://www.keeptherubbersidedown.net/2014/06/road-trip-to-centerburg-ohio.html">Centerburg;</a> a small village known as the geographical center of Ohio, and most recently I made a trek to Campbell Hill, the highest point in the state.<br><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-82C2-NhYxko/U6ybjAEApXI/AAAAAAAAL7A/ytTGvlklZOU/s1600/20140625_124529.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-82C2-NhYxko/U6ybjAEApXI/AAAAAAAAL7A/ytTGvlklZOU/s1600/20140625_124529.jpg" height="225" width="400"></a></div><div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u_fF6VgOMGs/U7gjrV6Ek0I/AAAAAAAAL8g/Prhm5pirdd0/s1600/20140625_125053-1-1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u_fF6VgOMGs/U7gjrV6Ek0I/AAAAAAAAL8g/Prhm5pirdd0/s1600/20140625_125053-1-1.jpg" height="400" width="355"></a></div><br></div><div>As the glaciers crept through this region, flattening everything in their path, the small spot now known as Campbell Hill stood it's ground, and at 1549.09 feet holds the honor of being the highest point in Ohio. The hill, named after a local farmer who owned the property, is located in Logan County in the town of Bellefontaine, some 50 miles Northwest of Columbus, off State Route 33.<br><br>In 1900 the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey placed a marble stone in the ground to mark the highest spot. Today a small courtyard encompasses the marker.</div><div><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qgbJ5370K0Q/U6ybQclqQEI/AAAAAAAAL64/9RscWXjbFqM/s1600/20140625_125233.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qgbJ5370K0Q/U6ybQclqQEI/AAAAAAAAL64/9RscWXjbFqM/s1600/20140625_125233.jpg" height="206" width="400"></a></div><div><br></div><div>From 1951-1969 the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron called Campbell Hill home. Their job was to keep a watchful eye out for enemy planes during the Cold War as well as offer navigation assistance to friendly aircraft.<a href="http://highpointers.org/history/oh-minahan.shtml"> (See more history here)</a></div><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FsJ2ICpMlm4/U7ghld2pMMI/AAAAAAAAL8M/IAS5Iy75W0k/s1600/oh-radar.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FsJ2ICpMlm4/U7ghld2pMMI/AAAAAAAAL8M/IAS5Iy75W0k/s1600/oh-radar.jpg" height="221" width="320"></a></div><br>I'll admit it's cool to be standing on the highest spot in Ohio, but it's not a tourist site you will want to spend all day visiting. If you decide to visit Campbell Hill, here are some area attractions that when added to your itinerary, would make for a fantastic day trip.<br><div><br></div><div><a href="http://www.ohiocaverns.com/">Ohio Caverns</a></div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://piattcastles.org/piattcastles/Home.html">Piatt Castles</a></div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://indianlake.com/">Indian Lake</a></div></div><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/keeptherubbersidedown/uukV/~4/ZnPViGNQNeA" height="1" width="1">
