The First Ducati Motorcycle

Ducati took its first steps as a motorcycle manufacturer by producing clip-on auxiliary engines for use with bicycles. Ducati began producing the engine in 1946 and it was named Cucciolo (Italian for puppy) because of the yapping sound the 48cc four-stroke single made.  Three years later they made their first entire motorcycle.

These photos are of a rare example of the very first complete Ducati motorcycle. This 1949/50 model had a Caproni designed & built frame that featured a cantilever rear suspension with friction dampers, together with telescopic front forks.

The motor was a modified version of the T3 Cucciolo's with revised bore & stroke, higher compression and a larger Weber carburettor. Ducati's business relationship with Caproni ended in May 1950 (when Caproni decided to build their own bikes).

Marvel at the 2.25hp delivered at 5,000rpm. At least it was light at 44kg. Never mind.  Without this motorcycle there could be no Ducati Panigale.  Check out more of the photos over at Phil Aynsley's site.
