Filtering in Queensland

Acacia Ridge, 04, Australia

Anyone that rides a motorbike in Queensland probably already knows that filtering is now legal. Unfortunately many car drivers don't keep up to date with the changes in road rules and may not be aware.

To avoid any angry confrontations with ignorant drivers, I figure it's best to give them the info and ride on. So, going through the Qld Road Rules, I've compiled a brief letter that you can hand any driver that winds down their window and tries to give you a gob full.

I've included a link (at the bottom) where you can download the PDF from Dropbox where one A4 sheet will give you 6 copies.

The text states:

Hello Driver,

In February of 2015 the Queensland Department of Transport changed some rules governing motorcycles.

You may not be aware of this, but in accordance with Section 151A:

Lane Filtering between slow or stationary vehicles is now legal.

Section 150 Subsection 1C

The rider of a motorbike may ride on or over a continuous white edge line on a road if the rider is edge filtering in compliance with section 151B.

Section 151A

  1. _The rider of a motorbike is __lane filtering __along a length of road if the rider rides the motorbike between—_1. two adjacent lines of traffic travelling in the same direction as the motorbike; or
  2. two vehicles (regardless of whether the rider remains within a single marked lane), each vehicle travelling in—

(i) the same direction as the motorbike; and

(ii) separate, but adjacent, marked lanes.
