How I glued my engine cover

Hole in the engine cover

Hole in the engine cover

May 2010, Arizona. Lee and I just completed hundreds of miles of dirt road and entered a gas station. I'm exhausted. I put down the side stand but apparently not all the way. I'm about to get off the bike and it falls on my boot. It starts to bleed. it bleeds oil. There is golf ball size hole. That's it, we are screwed. no more ride, no more fun. Lee decide to find a motorcycle service shop in that god forgotten town. I'm thinking to myself: no way. within a minute he returns: there is a Harley service shop behind the gas station. wow! I push the xr there and nicely ask the scary looking folks with guns if they could help. "it will take about 4 days to get the part" they say. "can't you fix it?" I prompt. "no chance, it is aluminum." that was quick reply. "Ok, can I use your place to try and fix it?" I ask. "you can use the sidewalk and the tools until we close". gee, thanks. Ok. I take the engine cover off, using my own tools. thanks to the shop I was able to clean it well so my epoxy will stick. I ask Lee to get a can of coke and motor oil. He still doesn't know what is the plan. "Ok, now drink the coke". he looks at me crazy: "are you going to use the can to seal it?". thanks to the shop I was able to easily cut the coke can to a perfect shape. I glued it with epoxy (jb weld) that I brought with me. I placed the cover back. waited few hours and good to go. I rode additional 500 miles, some dirt roads too, to get back to Lee's truck in Vegas. It was good ride.

Although I replaced the part, it is still good.
