Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Whether you are going to ride at a track day or at a racing event with your motorcycle, there are some things you should always remember to take with you.

I did my first race event of the season recently and forgot to bring a bunch of important stuff. You would think that after several decades of track days and racing, I would remember everything needed. I didn’t! So here is a brief list of the things to bring with you. I didn’t include the basics like the motorcycle, food, spare parts, tools, stands, riding gear and sleeping stuff. These things should be pretty basic and easy to remember.

Always bring:

  1. Fuel for the motorcycle and a generator (if you have to bring one).
  2. Sun screen and a hat if you have a bald spot.
  3. A canopy to keep sun and rain off you and your gear. Plus enough tie downs to keep said canopy from flying off the ground.
  4. A garden kneeling pad or low stool. My knees do not like to be on the ground. Do yours?
  5. Paper towels and Simple Green spray cleaning stuff. Clean bike=good, Dirty bike=bad.
  6. More water than you think you will need.
  7. Bottle, jar or box of spare nuts and bolts. If you forget this, I guarantee you will find a bolt or nut missing on your bike by end of day.
  8. More money than you think you will need. Invariably, the track food you crave will cost more than you expect (and those greasy fries will smell so good!).
  9. If you have to ‘pit’ on the grass or on gravel, a mat or decent sized piece of indoor/outdoor carpet to go on the ground is nice.
  10. Shop manual and note book. Invariably you will forget how to re-set your shift light or figure out how to turn off that damn TPMS light. The manual helps with these kinds of questions. The note book reminds you of stuff like: how much fuel to add, your tire pressures when the tires are hot, what rear sprocket did you use at this track last time, etc.
