One small problem - Nunavut

Distance: 13.8 Km / 8.6 Mi Duration: 00:25:22

The fledgling territory of Nunavut (it means “our land” in Inuktitut), offers a considerable challenge to the adventurous rider with bank. You can ride there, but you cannot ride to there. You must transport you and your mount via air or sea.

However, once you’ve both arrived – an accomplishment that’s neither easy nor inexpensive, but has apparently been done – you have about 850km of road awaiting you.

There are, of course, the legendary ice roads, but riding them would call for a level of planning, execution and masochism beyond the scope of our humble guide.

There is talk of a new road linking the ghost town of Sundance, Manitoba to Rankin Inlet in Nunavut. It’s mired in the planning stages and is likely to stay there for some time due to its $1.2 billion estimated build price-tag and $3 million in annual maintenance costs.

All this being the case, with much regret and strong sensations of reckless abandonment, we will not be including Nunavut in our Top 20 list.

What it lacks in road it makes up for in breathlessness: One small problem - Nunavut
