Farm, Forest & Sticky Buns - Saskatchewan

Distance: 157.0 Km / 97.8 Mi Duration: 01:54:20

Saskatchewan: Canada’s largest rectangle

The Canadian prairies present interesting challenges to motorcyclists. The truly, madly, wildly scenic ride can be hard to find. Long stretches of flat prairie do not an eye-popping ride make.

This route, from Prince Albert to Waskesiu Lake and back, is said to be one of nicer rides in the province's southern half. It’s just over 500 kms, and weekend traffic can be heavy with cagers heading to lake country.

The first 150km out of Saskatoon consist of divided highway and farmlands that change colours through spring, summer and fall. You’ll ride through fields of canola, wheat, peas and other grains. Farm turns to forest around 75km north of Saskatoon, thickening and getting wilder as you head north of Prince Albert. Photo credit http://thesuitesatwaskesiu.com

Wildlife is abundant. Riders commonly see deer, moose, elk, bear and wolves. Fortunately, roads tend to have wide ditches, so there’s fair warning of anything trying to run in front of you. Don’t stop to photograph bears. They are faster than you.

Where to stop

Waskesiu National Park, the largest in the southern half of Sask, charges $10.00 per entry, but you get it back if you pass through the park in less than an hour. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant for a sticky bun before hitting the old highway out of the Park toward Emma Lake.
