Eighties motorcycle commercials for the Nighthawk - why don't they make them like this any more?

You don't see too many commercials on TV for motorcycles these days. Whilst scanning around, I found the following wonderful commercials. For some reason, they're all for the Nighthawk/Nighthawk S - Was this the only bike advertised in the 80s?

The first one is gloriously sexist.

This one is clearly a "sequel/prequel" to the first. Clearly, this is a bike for cowboys.

This one clearly is designed to appeal more the sporty rider to the extent that it bludgeons you over the head with how great Cycle World thought it was. To be fair, they ride it fairly well.

This is my favourite though - Anything with Fast Freddie Spencer is a winner for me and it's way cooler than the cycle world ad above.

All these ads look somewhat clumsy by todays standards. Modern ads (if they exist) typically show a "cool" looking, anonymous rider in a deserted city at dusk. They've got a cool soundtrack and they generally do nothing for me. And they're pretty much all the same.

While they may be hokey, I'd love to see more of these style ads for todays bikes. If nothing else, I'd be happy to see the back of pumping techno or shredding guitar soundtracks.

Check out the BMW - Feed Your Restless campaign, especially the sport line commercial. That might do it for you. Ride Safe, Ride Often, Pic
