EBR Shutting Down Yet Again

The EBR 1190RX

The EBR 1190RX

American sportbike manufacturer EBR (Erik Buell Racing) Motorcycles will be closing its doors yet again. Erik Buell has an almost two and a half decade history of starting companies that have, for one reason or another, not worked out despite a successful decade or so when 'Buell Motorcycles' was a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson.

The recent press release from EBR explained that the brand had had difficulties attracting dealers to carry their products. This, combined with productions numbers not being met, ultimately lead to the decision to close up shop only a year after starting up operations. EBR was optimistic for 2016 and released a new model, 'Black Lightning' which lead to the impression that the lone American sportbike manufacturer was on the rise, but yesterday's news sadly confirms just the opposite.

Dealerships will still be selling off the remaining 2016 and 2017 production models and EBR has stated that they will continue to honor warranties as well as provide parts, service and support to EBR riders and dealers.

With Victory shutting its doors earlier this month, it's been a particularly painful week for the American motorcycle manufacturing industry.

Mr. Buell has seen a handful of companies go under since he first began building bikes under his name in 1983 so there's a distinct possibility that he may start another company or revive one of his now defunct brands.

I feel for Mr. Buell. There's a guy giving it his all, pouring his heart and soul into his dream. For all intents and purposes he's putting out some tremendous product. He's forged a respected name for himself in the industry and yet, here we go again. Is it the narrow focus of the lineup in a market that seems to be shrinking? Is it the stigma of being American and not a cruiser? I sure hope he has another go and this time sticks. Good luck Eric, the motorcycle world needs you.
