Bush Pilot Monument, Yellowknife

scenic/reststop 3513 Ingraham Drive, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada

The Bush Pilot's Monument is an obelisk monument atop a six story high rock in Yellowknife's old town commemorating 100 years of powered flight by the gutsy bush pilots who opened up the NWT. The City of Yellowknife began around this rock and how appropriate to put a monument to the pilots that made living in the far north possible.

It's bloody cold and wind swept but the Bush Pilot Monument is worth the 70-stair climb to the top for the most rewarding panoramic views of Yellowknife and Great Slave Lake. Check the Canadian Space Agency AuroraMax camera for daily live broadcasts of Aurora Borealis. If it looks good, head out to this spot for the real thing.

It was actually here, on this flat Rock, that the old town of Yellowknife was built on. In 1967 it was dedicated to the bush pilots and air engineers of Canada who provided a crucial link between Yellowknife and the rest of the country. The Rock is the ideal place to view the old and the new parts of Yellowknife.
