Helmet expiry date?

I have had my current helmet for 5 years. It seems that there is an industry agreed upon expiration date for helmets. Looking to see what others think. My season is over for the winter and am looking at helmets but I would really rather spend money on other gear for me or the bike.

thanks for the inputs. the liner still feels solid and not moving but better safe than sorry. Time to run down to GP and try on helmets.

I just purchased a new helmet for this very reason. 5 years seems to be when warranty runs out form the manufacture, it is 5 yrs from purchase or 7 years from manufacture date. My reason was the inner foam was moving inside the shell and leads me to believe the integrity of the helmet had declined. it is an important piece of safety gear. but it is your head and you have to decide, inspect your helmet, does it seem solid inside?
