Voss 888 CF Matte Carbon Fiber Helmet

I have been riding for almost 6 years now, weather permitting each and every day for about 50 km. I would ride in winter as well as long as the temperatures are above 5 degrees Celsius (that's 41 Fahrenheit) and obviously as long as there's no snow on the ground.

My Suzuki C50T cruiser is my daily commuter and the weekend relaxation companion. The ride to work is 65% urban and 35% highway. When I just want to relax, I take the back roads with no particular destination in mind. So far, the bike has been kind to me, I never had any major breakdowns or anything like that. I do the maintenance work myself, oil, fluids and brakes

Personally, I am a ATGAATT kind of rider (All The Gear At All The Times). I always wore half-helmets; even in those cold mornings, I would just attach the neck liner to keep me warm. There are a few things I am looking for when it comes to helmets:

  • weight; I don't like feeling like I am wearing a bag of beans on my head
  • ventilation; very important to me on those hot, humid summer days, especially when I get stuck in traffic
  • looks; if I am going to wear the thing on my head, I want it to look good, right? 
  • a nice quick and secure strap system
  • it has to have a visor as I am wearing prescription glasses

That said, I had the chance to test the Voss 888 CF Matte Carbon Fiber helmet for a couple of weeks.

First thought when unboxing it was about the weight, it is very light at only 850 grams (or 1.87 lbs)

I was surprised to see that it actually came with a quick release system instead of the advertised double d-ring retention system. Obviously, it is much easier to use especially with the gloves on and it feel pretty solid.

According to the size chart, I am a size ‟L” but the helmet felt quite tight at first, maybe the interior lining needs to break in a bit. After wearing it for a while though, it feels about right. The matte carbon fibre gives it a nice, sleek look, different from other helmets.

As far as ventilation goes, I wish it had adjustable front vents to provide additional air flow. A vented helmet would have been just perfect for those hot, humid summer days. I wouldn't call this a show stopper though.

The included two visors are a great feature, the dark one for daytime while riding to and from work, the clear one for the evening rides.

After two weeks of daily use, on both highways and city environments, I find this helmet a very good buy, it retails for only $129.99 which, in my opinion, is a very good price. You can find more information and order here: http://www.vossdot.com/contact.htm

To sum it all, the, Voss 888 CF is a light, easy to wear, nice looking helmet that I would definitely recommend for the price.
