SKULLY Helmet, the Sequel: Can new owners make it right?

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

SKULLY Helmets is reborn under a new name: SKULLY Technologies, acquired by Ivan Contreras and Rafael Contreras, owners of dirt bike company GasGas.

Yup, founders Mitch and Marcus Weller may have spent all their millions on hookers and fast cars, but there's still value in the tech.

Ivan Contreras, take son the role of President of the new company with a new leadership team headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

SKULLY Technologies says is unrelated to the former SKULLY, Inc., which filed bankruptcy and is no longer in business. However there must be some relation because, we're assuming, the IP (intellectual property) and name was purchased by the new owners.

Although SKULLY Technologies has no formal obligation to the customers of the now defunct SKULLY, Inc., they recognize that hundreds of SKULLY helmet enthusiasts around the world have contributed to this product and were understandably pissed that they never received one.

The company says it intends to honor orders under the criteria listed below.

"We would like to give anyone who previously pre-ordered or contributed to the effort via Indiegogo the opportunity to receive one of our new SKULLY FENIX AR helmets, an improved version of the SKULLY AR-1 which will begin shipping the summer of 2018."

I received this in the email informing me SKULLY was back a few days ago

As a member of the SKULLY Nation, you may have already heard that an entirely new company, SKULLY Technologies, is bringing back the SKULLY helmet!

We are thrilled to inform you that the assets of SKULLY, Inc., have been acquired by Ivan Contreras and Rafael Contreras, successful entrepreneurs with a rich experience in start-up and turnaround ventures. These ventures include the electric vehicle manufacturer Torrot, the championship off-road motorcycle brand GasGas, the innovative electric ride-share operator MUVING, the smart city technologies company Sensefields, the aerospace carbon fiber manufacturer Carbures… and now SKULLY.

Their goal is to fulfill SKULLY’s destiny and begin shipping the SKULLY FENIX AR (the evolution of the SKULLY AR-1) this summer as their first wearable tech gear product from SKULLY Technologies.

We have been focusing our energies on product development to ensure we bring to market the original feature set SKULLY Nation desired and expected.

Ivan Contreras, President of SKULLY Technologies, assembled a new leadership team with extensive technology and manufacturing experience and has located the headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Stay tuned for an announcement next week regarding more details on the SKULLY FENIX AR as we have an exciting reveal coming your way!

Thank you for being a part of the SKULLY Nation!

The new Fenix AR by SKULLY

The new helmet is called the Fenix AR and ships Summer 2018, here it is. It looks cool but, it's surprising they kept the same name given how many people were screwed.

It remains to be seen if the new helmet will be DOT approved in California because it does obstruct your point of view.

Inside the helmet you get a mini-tv that does the same thing your mobile phone does for a third of the price. It look like it has a GPS built-in which is good but it's not confirmed. However, if you drop your helmet you don't have to replace everything! Watch the video.

While I'm happy that the new owners have taken care to compensate previous buyers, I still don't get the purpose of this device.

I can turn my head to check my blindspot. I can stream music, get turn by turn gps and even stream music from my phone already, mainly as I have a $200 communicator that I can also use to chat with the wife and other ride companions.

In fact, I'm pretty sure, without a phone, you're not making calls or streaming music on the Skully either.

in short, while I'm sure it's cool, it's really just a little screen stuck in my field of vision. I've no idea how well I can see it, or how distracting it will be, especially at night. And I've no idea if it will even pass DOT or any other helmet safety tests.

Of course, I'm such a tech nerd, I still want to try it,
