EICMA: Kawasaki reveals four new bikes including the super naked Z1000 for 2014

Kawasaki launched four new 2014 models at EICMA today.

The J300 is Kawasaki's first scooter for Europe and it's built for urban performance. A 300cc engine and a CVT transmission make it a mid-range but Kawasaki cite the work they've done on making this not just rideable but fun. With no launch planned in North America, all we can do is admire the pictures…

The Z1000 is the one we expected. Kawasaki's Z1000 in-line four super naked is updated with:

  • Tokico monobloc calipers on petal rotors for (what Kawi call) the best braking in the supernaked sector
  • Big piston forks that work just as well on gentle city rides as they do hammering it into corners
  • new front end cowl with ultra-bright LED lamps
  • more power, more torque (especially low down) and a smoother throttle response from an updated ECU

Kawasaki believe the Z1000 is the epitome of their ‟sugomi” (big cat) design philosophy and it certainly looks the part, combining an aggressive stance with flowing lines.

Now for the Z1000SX is for those of your that prefer a (slightly) more genteel approach to their literbikes, Kawasaki also had their new for 2014 Z1000SX sport tourer here and it definitely looks to be at the sportier end of the sport tourer segment.

New features includes three mode traction control as standard, optional ABS, improved trip computer, revised rear shock and tokico monobloc callipers at the front. Comfort is improved with plusher seats, an improved chassis and higher, wider mirrors.

For sport touring, luggage is important. The optional panniers are mounted close to the bike, and release from the discrete mounting system to maintain the lines of the bike when removed. There's also an optional top case if you need that much room.

KX85 - With forty years of KX production racers under their belts, the new for 2014 KX85 adds to the tradition. It's positioned as an ideal ‟bridge” machine for younger riders to cut their teeth before they jump to more adult machinery and comes in both a big and small wheel configurations. For those racing it, peak power is up 20% which will prove welcome.

Tom Sykes, SBK Champion - Kawasaki couldn't really have had their press conference without the presence of Tom Sykes, who's managed to deliver their first SBK championship in 20 years. Tom was presented with a plate to commemorate his achievement.
