Kingdom of the Moors- Granada to Marrakesh

Distance: 1031.1 Km / 642.4 Mi Duration: 20:36:18

Spanning two continents, go from 1000 year old historical Granada across the Bay of Gibraltar, then south through Morocco towards Marrakesh

Adding some history into a motorcycle ride can only enhance the experience, and this route is steeped in history. With the route starting at the Alhambra Castle in Granada, the past is present in spades. The only downside for this route is the amount of time required to finish it, with the whole route running around 650 miles. This is a huge undertaking, but well worth it.

After you've got your fill of 9th century architecture in Spain, head on south along the A7 towards Gibraltar. Follow the road around the Bay of Gibraltar until you reach the port of Algeciras, where the ferry runs every day to Tangier. Catch that and in just a bit over an hour your wheels will be down on African ground.

Once in Morocco, there's a couple of routes you can take. There's the bumpier and less even N1, which runs along the coast, or the A1 highway, which will be faster but less scenic. Whatever you prefer, there's a road for you. Both routes run from Tangier to Rabat, the Moroccan capital, to Casablanca, two cities which are famously beautiful.

From Casablanca, the A7 highway will carry you southbound about 150 miles to Marrakech, home to overwhelming markets which are famous around the world. The neighboring Atlas Mountains are also worth visiting, with fantastic views and heights up to 13,761 feet above sea level. Getting directions aren't too difficult as well, as once you're in Morocco all the signs are in both English and Arabic. As long as you know some basic French you should be able to get by perfectly fine.
