Some interesting tips that I wouldn't have thought of in the newspaper article. This emphasizes the benefits of having an experienced guide or co-traveller. It's an example of how cultural-centric we can be (especially in North America) - we just assume/expect people and customs are "the same everywhere" and that the differences are "quaint". Not the case - ever. Don't wait until you get into a situation to find out you don't have any legal rights or protection, or any expectation of public services (i.e. police or justice) to assist you. Do your homework...
