Million dollar highway
Distance: 112.0 Km / 69.8 Mi Duration: 02:04:51
We did the million dollar highway from Durango to Ouray Colorado. Although research shows really only the section from Silverton to Red Mountain is the "million dollar" part. Research also shows two origins of the name. One is that it cost one million dollars a mile to build in 1920. The other is they found one million dollars worth of gold as they made the roadbed. We started at the southern end on Durango. If you stop at this end there is a hot spring just on the north side of town. But we are continuing on.
Rest with trees
The views are great all the way up. There are also several places to stop along the way if you would like including Silverton, but we chose to ride past Silverton
Overlook at Molas Pass
Overlook two
On the top of Molas pass there is a big parking area to take in the views.
Down toward Ouray
One the way down the hill into Ouray there are a couple of places to stop where you can get a glimpse of some of the mining history in the are. Our ride today stops on Ouray. And like Durango there are hot springs in the area. 3 in town and another about 8 miles north of town if you are inclined to take a soak.
