England, United Kingdom

The Triumph model line grew by two with the addition of the 2024 Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X.

These machines, the smallest displacement bikes in the Triumph lineup, are all-new starting from the liquid-cooled 398cc fuel-injected single. The engine features a four-valve DOHC head along with a crank that's weighted and balanced for low-speed rideability. A six-speed gearbox gets power to the drivetrain.

Beginners and experienced riders alike will benefit from the design and engineering that went into these two models with an eye on comfort and performance.

Traditional Triumph styling is evident throughout as they each emulate their larger displacement siblings. You will find the same cylinder finning and upswept exhausts, for example. The Speed 400 has a 790mm seat height and weighs 170kg, while the Scrambler 400 X has a 835mm seat height and weighs in at 179kg. Each model has a new frame, bolt-on rear subframe and cast-aluminum swingarm.

The Speed 400 has 43mm upside-down forks, rear mono-shock, plus 17-inch wheels. Braking up front is handled by a four-piston radial caliper grabbing a 300mm disc through braided lines.

As belied by its dimensions, the Scrambler 400 X is a bigger bike with wider handlebars, a longer wheelbase, more travel, and 19-inch wheels.A larger cast steel brake pedal plus high-grip foot pegs positioned lower and wider make for a more natural standing riding position when riding off-road. The front brake has a 320 mm disc and optimised pad compound for progressive braking in all conditions.

As you would expect from a brand new model, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X abound with technology.

They have ride-by-wire throttle; traction control and ABS (ABS is switchable for the Scrambler 400 X); dual-format instruments with combined analogue and digital displays; torque-assist clutch to reduce lever effort; and LED lighting.

To keep thieves from thinking your new bike is an easy mark, each model has a steering lock along with an anti-theft immobiliser. A chip key ensures that only you can start the bike.

The Speed 400’s two-tone paint schemes feature a prominent Triumph tank graphic, with Carnival Red, Caspian Blue and Phantom Black colours available.

The Scrambler 400 X has additional features that will come in handy if you plan to venture off the beaten path. You can be confident in the ability of your bike to get there and back thanks to protection for the headlight, radiator and sump, as well as handguards, a handlebar brace with pad, and a longer front mudguard. The Scrambler 400 X has three colour schemes, each featuring Triumph’s distinctive ‘Scrambler’ tank stripe and triangle badge, with Matt Khaki Green and Fusion White, Carnival Red and Phantom Black, plus Phantom Black and Silver Ice options.
